I may try to move the pig back with the fishing rod, but for now I'll leave him be. He seems to have made his new home at the top of a fence post. Idiot.
I'm currently working on the town hall, and it's taking a while because I am insisting on using a lot of wool and snow, both of which are a pain in the butt to harvest. I think I need to set up a temporary snow farm and put a pen of light blue sheep nearby so I have an easier time. I'm still trying to figure out how to go about the layout, too. It doesn't help that I'm building on top of the mountain that hangs over the town square and there isn't all that much space on top. Need to do some more sketching.
Plus, I still need to make the stairway up to it. I was scouting for a good area to put stairs, preferably one of the pillar formations so I could have a nice spiral. I wandered around and looking down, I saw my water stream. Being too lazy to go all the way back to the townhall and down my temporary stairs, I jumped down, aiming for the water but...
I hope you like the look of the townhall when it's completed. It's in a slightly different style from my other buildings, so I hope it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb.
Can sheep eat grass covered in snow, though? Plus, I wanted to have the snow golems in a little room made of cobble so I don't accidentally dig up grass or dirt. That's annoying. :P
So, my first very basic snow/wool farm combo was pretty stupid. It was good for a laugh though. I kept accidentally hitting sheep with my shovel and everyone was constantly in my way. I decided to try to pin the sheep in their own holding cells with glass, so I ran back down to my house to get some.
When I returned to the construction site, my golems were gone. I don't have everything lit up one hundred percent up there so I can only assume that the golems were killed by mobs. I have a makeshift farm next to the pen, and I realized it is possible mobs climbed the pumpkins to get into it.
I read up on snow golems since I don't know much about them. Also saw a picture of a simple snow farm where you just hold the golem in place and shovel away next to it.
While redoing the pen a bit to replace the cobble with glass, a sheep and a golem escaped. They're standing on the edge of a cliff, stuck on a single block. Idiots.
It's really annoying that mobs immediately try to escape. They need to fix that. I want the wolves to be able to herd animals. :/ Now that's a good idea for the next update.
Hm, my townhall is getting a second floor and I had to tear down some of it in order to do that. Here's a sneak peak of my progress so far:
I spent a lot of time building the stairs leading up here, so that's why not much is done to the building itself. Those stairs need to be prettied up, too. They're just kind of hanging awkwardly off of the mountainsides here and there. I'll add support and flesh out the hills more so it doesn't look as odd.
Snow is very bright and striking, dont' know why I haven't used it in the past. It's just annoying to work with, since it gives you back balls instead of the block. Hm. Does silk touch work on snow blocks? Should test that out next time I go back to my house. :P
But look how cute the snow golems and sheep are together! I hope you keep the pen, even if it has no use. Haha. It's almost like the two stuck on the cliff should be in the next Homeward Bound movie or something. =]
And snow is rather bright. It looks good for buildings since it kinda seems to have a glow to it, like glossy paint or something.
Homeward Bound LOL! I'll have to name the sheep Sassy, then. The snow golem can be Shadow. Not sure about Chance. Maybe Pig-Who-Stands-On-Fence, the pig formerly known as Pig-Who-Stands-On-Roofs, can be Chance. Whew that was hard to type.
The town hall looks like its coming on well! A bit of constructive criticism- Maybe add some of the dark wood to the other parts of the hall, not only the corners? And I would guess that silk touch works on snow. Why wouldn't it?

NOPE! Sorry, but Silk Touch doesn't work on Snow Blocks - I've just tried it by enchanting a Spade with Silk Touch (( I tried a Silk Touch Pickaxe at first, but it destroyed the Snow Block ))
On purpose. Snow/Snow Blocks can only be gathered with a Spade. If Silk Touch doesn't work ((even on a Spade)) it stands to reason that it's intentional.
It's been my experience that the best level to get "Silk Touch" on a diamond pickaxe is level 22 - I think docm77 or Etho said that and I tried it for myself and it worked! :- )
Hm, I think you're right, Wartower. I should add in more of the logs to tie it into the design better. Hmmm I just don't know where or how yet. Will work more on that and share my progress. Thanks for the suggestion! :)
Too bad about silk touch not working on snow blocks. They're adding back in the ability to silk touch ice, so maybe snow will be added too. That would be nice.
Somehow, the townhall is centered with the schoolhouse. I didn't do that intentionally, just positioned the building so it fit on the mountaintop.
It looks weird to me, but I hope that when I add more buildings it will look better as a whole.
I've spent a lot of time on Merris and it's far from complete. I want that mountain overflowing with buildings and balconies and clusters of flowers and trees. I want it to look busy and lived in, and like somewhere you might like to visit. :P
I think it looks cool centered! Oh, and do you plan to do something with those two floating dirt blocks on the right? I think I'm going to notice it now in every picture...
It does look awesome centered, and even a little bit humorous since you didn't plan it. Haha.
Ooooooooh. A secret tunnel from the town hall to the schoolhouse to help in the zombie apacolypse would be neat. That's probably just something I would do, though. =P Haha.
Like with the random sand block an Enderman left up on the mountain, I find those floating blocks humorous, so I may leave them. If they bother you, Wartower, I may be even more inclined to leave them there just to mess with your head. Next round of downloads, I might even let you spawn there with nothing in your inventory. From that height, I don't believe you'll die if you jump off, just break your legs a little. :)
Linking the schoolhouse and townhall makes a lot of sense, actually. Great idea, Gilbert!
No updates today, as I went to the lake. It was really hot but whenever it got to be too much I went for a swim in the lake. Walked through a few trails in the woods and after climbing up a very steep incline, the whole group of us had to take a break. Two of us were smokers, one of us overweight and one asthmatic. We're ill suited to roughing it in the woods, that's for sure. XD
I really love that particular park, and think it might be fun to recreate the lake area in Minecraft. The lake is no more than an oversized pond surrounded by woods and marsh so I think it would be on a small enough scale to do in Creative, or perhaps make an even smaller version of it in survival somewhere on my AMCWAS world. :)
I was thinking today of how much I miss the "Oof" hurting sounds, but it's times like these that the legs/ankles breaking sound is much, much better. Haha.
Ha! Your description of your hiking group was rather humorous. Recreating a real-life lake in your world would be pretty cool. It would fit right in, I think.
I miss the old sounds, too. It just doesn't make sense to hear CRACK! when you get shot in the face with an arrow. :/ Oh well. Maybe in a future update, they'll improve on at least the hurting sounds. Male and female versions of the "oof" effect would be nice. :P
Yeah, I had good company with me on my little trip. We're all goofballs so I'm surprised none of us suffered severe cramps trying to laugh and climb hills at the same time!
I've been focusing so hard on the damned townhall that I'm starting to want to do other things, especially the lake. But I wanted to finish at least the exterior before starting on something else.
Oh and looky, an update!
I've been thinking about how to improve on the townhall and finally came up with something I like. I perused the screenshots section of the MC Forums and saw this post:
I'm not copying this beautiful mansion, of course. (it's a lot prettier than my humble little hall but eh...too much work lol) But the logs sticking out from the normal walls is what I was looking at. I'm working with limited space so I had to do something that would fit in with the dimensions I already had set in place.
So this is what I did:
The window sections stick out from the wall. Also added the window above the doors. I abuse upside down stairs, but they are just the best to work with! I love them.
I was at first worried that the overall building wouldn't still scream BLUE! but it seems that it does. I'm relieved.
I didn't mention that I came up with a few characters for my world (sketched at the lake a bit) and one of them is the mayor. She is very fond of blue, and in fact she and her family all have blue hair. Why not? The mayor's name is Bellatrude Douterre (Douterre is based on Dotour, the mayor of Clocktown in Majora's Mask).
Bellatrude and her husband Mortimer have three children: Morris, Markus and Marilize. I only have vague info about them. If I can pry myself away from Minecraft long enough to draw and write, I'll see if I can share some sketches and more information. :P
You could always change the audio in the resource files of your .minecraft folder. =) Just a matter of finding the right sounds and matching them with the right damage inducer thingamajig.
Haha. That's good. Glad you had fun on your hiking expedition.
That's crazy! The windows and logs are sticking out of the wall! I like it. Haha. It seems to add to the structure and presumed rigidity. I hadn't noticed the buttons along the roofline before now, and I like those, too. Looks pretty neat.
Sweet! Characters! I'm really excited to hear about Morris since his name is so close to Merris. I also want to know if Mortimer dyed his hair blue just to impress Bellatrude. Oh, and nice reference to Majora's Mask!
That looks awesome! Really, really great. I never really use the sounds... Mostly because I listen to Youtube while I play, and I get mixed up with the different sounds. Hearing a creeper can freak me out, even when its from a video... I only noticed those buttons after t_gilbert mentioned them. They really add something to it.
