Thanks guys! ^^ I was kind of nervous to post my drawings here, so it's nice to hear a positive response to them.

I love pirates and after drawing Mortimer, I realized he looked like one, so ex pirate he is!

Umm, I believe the player has to have two blocks to fit through. So if something spawns in the little grave spaces they shouldn't be able to fit through the opening to get to me, but still the floor is a problem. I think I should drop the floor down one block and fill it with water. Mobs don't spawn on water...oh no I hope they don't change it so they do in 1.3. Ahhhh I just want a dark creepy crypt without mobs in it. That too much to ask?

Other than the old hurting sounds, I like the rest of them. Not bothered enough by it to try to change that, in any case. :P

The buttons are meant to sort of mimick fancy molding I've seen on a lot of the townhall pics I found online.

Updates:

I died twice by failing to land in water. I should just make a diving platform. Geez. Added the two deaths as one grave to save space in the crypt. :P I still don't know what I want to do for the flooring when 1.3 comes out. Mobs spawning on half slabs is cruel, Mojang. :(

Anyways, I worked on the roof mostly for the townhall and ran out of brick so I had to go collect more clay. I did some minor enchanting before that and got an aqua affinity I helmet, not bad! That definitely helped with my clay harvesting.

While out and about, I tried to collect some records from creepers. I broke armor, nearly died many times, ran out of food and had to hunt spiders and zombies for their spare parts...Yuck. But! I got three records! I put them in a chest in the Sweet Beats Records Shop and plan to make a jukebox and put it in there so I can play music.

---

I also did some sketching in Gimp for a few characters. And have a bit of info done.

Bellatrude:

Bellatrude-concept.png?t=1341105381

She may be obsessed with beauty, fashion and sparkly gems, but Bellatrude isn't shallow in the slightest. The great great grand daughter of the founder of Merris, Bellatrude is proud of her town and does everything in her power for its residents.

Her husband, an ex pirate, shares Bellatrude's passion for gems, and in fact he gave her the large lapis lazuli she wears on a long chain.

---

Mortimer:

Mortimer-concept.png?t=1341106564

He was once a pirate but left his crooked ways after falling in love with, and marrying, Bellatrude. Mortimer sports a gold tooth and rumors claim he has a tattoo of a dragon on his belly. (scandalous!)

He's very cranky and opinionated, and has a very crude manner of speaking no matter what company he is in. Despite his constant bickering and complaining, he lets Bellatrude more or less do whatever she wants, even dressing him up in ridiculous frilly clothes. Mortimer rarely shows his soft side so people often wonder what Bellatrude sees in him.

In Mortimer's eyes, the only one of their children to amount to anything is their youngest son, Markus, who is a guard of the town.

Marilize:

Marilizeconcept.png?t=1341106550

She's the middle child and the only daughter. Marilize is very quiet and calm, and cares more for animals than people. Except for her brother Morris, who  she understands better than anyone else. She spends most of her time exploring the wild lands and tending to injured animals. Her skill with remedies and mending bones would make her a great doctor, except that she has no desire to become one, much to her father's dismay. He keeps trying to set her up with suitors but Marilize pays them no mind.

No drawings of Morris or Markus yet but I have an idea of what they are going to look like.

Morris is the eldest son. He's an outsider and quite eccentric and unpredictable. His obsession with creepers creeps everyone out (but his sister) and he lives in an upside down house. His father is hard on him, always wishing he was more like his brother Markus.

Markus is the youngest. He's strong and athletic, a bit of a womanizer, and dreams of one day becoming captain of the guard. Morris despises him but Markus treats his brother kindly. He wishes he could get to know him better, but he has a hard time getting through Morris' cold exterior.

~That's what I have so far on the Douterre family. I've been stocking up on leather, paper and ink sacs in the game so when 1.3 arrives, I'll be able to include biographies and back story and dialogue and all that in books. Oooh I can't wait!!!

It's all in .ogg files, anyhow. =P Haha.

So that's how you keep mobs from spawning in the crypt! I was wondering. Can the player fit in a one and half block high space? Or does it have to be two blocks high?

Those sketches are amazing! You have quite a talent. And I love the description of Mortimer. Ahhhhhh! When 1.3 comes out, this is gonna be so awesome. I mean, it's already awesome, but it's gonna be even more awesome!

Yes. Hahaha. What about transparent blocks? It might end up looking kinda funny, but they can't spawn on glass, can they? I'm just getting this idea from mobs not being able to spawn on leaves, so I could be wrong about the not spawning on glass thing.

If you do fill it with water, are you gonna have a boat in there and pretend it's the River Styx? =)

Ah, a boat that would be cool! Hm, I did think about glass. Maybe in total darkness, it won't be that noticeable, but I"m going to try water first. I'll work on it next time I die and have to go in there again to put up a new sign.

Naming the 'river' Styx would be a little too creepy I think. Perhaps I'll save that for my Nether village. Though it'll be a lava river as opposed to a water river.

You'll just have to be sure not to crash it into the walls that are extremely close together. Hopefully you'll hurry up and die so you can do stuff to it. Haha. Just kidding. Sort of. Haha. And yeahh, the name Styx would definitely be more suited for the Nether.

:P Haven't died again yet, and good news! I finished the roof of my townhall! I redid this one section of it over and over again, trying to get it to look right. I also changed the roof on the front. It used to have four pillars, but the triangular roof above it had to be really big to fit onto the pillars, and it didn't work with the rest of the roof, so I took down the two outer pillars and just have two now, and after making the triangle above it smaller, it fits much, much better.

2012-07-02_193316.png

I also changed the large window above the door and added a window in the attic, in that triangular thingy (I'm no architect, I don't know what things are called okay?)

Though it's far from finished, I'll give a little tour of the WIP townhall:

You step inside into the foyer, with an awful carpet that needs to be redesigned:

2012-07-02_190335.png

The stairs straight ahead lead you up to the mayor's office, the bedrooms of the mayor and family, a space with no purpose yet, and the attic.

The single door leads downstairs to what will be the town treasury and the jail, maybe.

The doorway to the right leads to the dining hall, which is an empty room at the moment. Coming off from the dining hall is the kitchen, which has a room connected to that for storage. Mostly food, dishes, coal, stuff like that.

The doorway to the left is the meeting hall, where the folks of Merris discuss things and hold court:

2012-07-02_190349.png

That's a podium up there on the stage. I need to make it a different color so it stands out more.  Skeletons kept spawning in here so I spammed torches until I get nice lighting in.

I'm starting to get annoying block lag up here and it's making things much harder on me now. I click once to place a block and I get three, usually not where I want them. I had this happen in my little house in town, too, but I thought the problem there was the mine going all the way down to bedrock, and all the caves and ravines.

Not sure why it's getting bad in the townhall. Perhaps because of how high up it is. It seems to happen the most upstairs or on the roof.

I really like the two pillars instead of the four. It looks cleaner or something. More open, maybe, I guess? Haha.

Hey, I like that carpet! =P Haha. How do you think those lamp things would look in the town meeting hall? You know, the glowstone with the trapdoors on it?

I'm also having issues with block lag. Obviously, it's the new BoA curse. Haha.

Aaah, darn it, we're always cursed with something! Now it's the Block Lag of Doom.

I probably will go with glowstone lighting inside since I won't be able to hide redstone torches for the lamps. Jack o lanterns behind paintings for some walls, too. Wish it was possible to place trap doors underneath blocks without a block having to be next to it. That's annoying Mojang, fix that mmmkay?

What do you guys think I should do about the light blue sheep? I don't need them anymore and I have more than enough in the barn. I could be nice, lead them down to ground level safely with wheat, and let them be free.
Or, I could launch them off of the mountain with my Knockback I sword. Or throw snowballs at them.

I'm almost done with the exterior of the building. Yay! Also started carving out a space for the town treasury. I think the jail will be a separate building now. There really isn't much room inside the mountain, and it seems dangerous to have a jail so close to the town treasury, the mayor's residence and the schoolhouse full of kids. Seems like asking for trouble, though I doubt Merris sees too much crime. Maybe the jail can be in the basement of one of the guard towers I plan to build. It won't be nearly as epic or beautiful as Wartower's, but hopefully it will look good with the rest of the town. :P

Cooking all the clay for the brick roof of the townhall left me dangerously low on coal, so I explored some of the ravine and connecting caves that's near my zombie xp grinder. I took one of my Fortune III picks and had my inventory full of coal in no time. While digging around, I found some explored sections and dug through a cobbled up wall to see what I was blocking, and derp, it was the water elevator for my xp farm. I think I fixed it, but we'll see. I placed a bunch of torches on the outside of the wall so I'd know next time: do not dig here!

I think the next thing I'm going to do after the townhall is work on carving out a river that connects a lake and my little stream to the ocean, and set up a dock. Maybe build a few small boats in the water. I also want to remove all the dirt and replace it with sand. I hate the splotches of different blocks in the water, it looks awful. Not really much to show, sorry for the lack of pictures.

I put more thought into other characters that live in Merris:

The farmers consist of Gunner Hardy, his wife, Agnes, their eldest daughter Hester and her six other brothers and sisters.

The school teacher is a shy, plain but very sweet woman named Midge. Last name pending, and she is subject to change.

Lulu's Cafe is owned and operated by Lucinda, who has a fierce rivalry with the bakery owner Harold. They're always competing in various ways and the town is split in who makes the best pastries. There are rumors that despite their apparent dislike of each other, they are actually quite in love, just show it in their own peculiar way.

I might not live in that town, but Harold has the best pastries. Just sayin'.

Anywaaayss, you should definitely lead the blue sheep down the mountain peacefully with some wheat. *Nods*

It's really cool that you're putting thought into the placement of some of your buildings. I doubt most people (myself included) would think twice about building a jail right next to all those places. Haha.

At least when you dug through that cobble, it was sorta exciting! Haha. Most of the time with me, it's just plugged up 1x1 holes.

Gilbert, you and your sheep, lol. Maybe I'll compromise. Half will be punted off the cliff to their tragic deaths (I'll even give them a grave in the crypt), half will be led down safely to live as they might. Maybe I'll lure them into wolf territory, see how it goes. Mwa ha ha!

I'll tell Harold the good news: with your vote for his pastries, I think he might be in the lead. Lucinda will probably say it's against the rules for out of towners to vote, however. And then whether or not non Merrisians can vote will be a huge debate. The mayor will be dragged in. An anonymous bribe in the form of a delicious apple pie will be delivered at the town sheriff's door with a note requesting the baker be thrown in jail for a few aeons. Since there are several people famed for their delicious apple pie living in town, it will never be discovered exactly who baked and sent it. And so on and so forth. :P

Wartower, thanks! Designing characters is my favorite thing to do! I usually never get around to writing the story, I just doodle and imagine.

Update: I am nearly finished with the townhall exterior. I thought I was finished until I looked at the screenshots again. I'm missing some verticle lines and need to include chimneys for the furnaces still, but it won't look too different. Here are shots of all the sides:

2012-07-03_163738.png

2012-07-03_163903.png

2012-07-03_164338.png

2012-07-03_164449.png

I couldn't add in windows in certain spots because there were walls separating different rooms. I need to do some terraforming and add balconies and fence here and there to make it look more inviting.

Worked some on the interior.

The foyer: That potted plant is in a bit of an awkward spot, but it was tooo dark in that corner otherwise. I'll work on a better solution.

2012-07-03_182341.png

2012-07-03_182328.png

The dining hall:

2012-07-03_180435.png

The table was difficult to do since those are upside down half slabs. I had to take out the floor to position myself under dirt blocks, then remove those. I just wanted to do something different than the usual piston or fence and pressure plate tables I see so often. When 1.3 comes out, I'll probably change those half slabs to the pine plank slabs so it looks more like a real table. Look at the light! I love it, and am really proud of it for some reason. XD

You better not lead them into wolf territory! =P Haha. I always hate to see sheep by wolves because I can't really do anything unless I wanna die, too. So most of the time, I just wait around and get the leftover wool. Haha.

Ahh, but each baker of apple pies must have something special that they do in terms of ingredients or decore of the pie. It's a mystery...

Anywhoooo, I really love that town hall. And I just now noticed the stone brick "foundation." Very nice detail! The foyer's new carpet design looks pretty cool, too. Much better than the old one (even though the old one was perfectly fine, haha). Those are some really cool lights; I don't think I've ever seen anyone use glass panes on glowstone, and it looks cool!

I just started wondering: How much clay did you have to get for all that brick??

Great job! I like the lighting and interior design!
Oh, and here's a suggestion for the table (it might change the table a bit, but it's still cool)- Use bricks/cobblestone/stone bricks/wood planks, and their corresponding stairs/slabs, you can put upside-down stairs at two sides of the table, and upside down slabs in the middle of- the rest of it. It would be a different style, so maybe you don't want to use it. Just wanted to bring that up!

I don't even know how much clay I had to harvest for all the brick. It's hard to calculate because I wasn't really keeping count. But I did go through at least four whole stacks of coal to cook a good deal of that clay, and that's not including my temporary brick cookers I set up outside while harvesting, or what I cooked at my little base of operations outside of the hall. Used a lot of wood and saplings as fuel too when I was out and about with no coal. tl; dr i dunno, a lot?

I went with the stone brick foundation because it looked better than continuing with the logs and snow, plus I already have stockpiles of stone brick whereas I kept having to harvest more snow and cut down more trees for the other supplies.

Wartower, I'm not quite sure I can picture that. Would you be so kind as to give me a visual example? I did want to have the wool in the middle to simulate a runner or table cloth type deal. It would have to be a design that fits in the room, as well. It's a bit narrow and I can't block access to the back wall, which is where there is a doorway to the kitchen, storage and a teeny bathroom.

I played around a bit and I do like the design. It works for smaller tables, too. So again, thanks for the suggestion, I love it! Wartower, have you seen Beef's jungle village? I love how he's trying not to disturb the natural terrain and building into and around it. It looks great!

Also, yeah, I'm kind of lacking in updates, myself. I'm so burned out from working on that blasted townhall that I'm taking a little break from it. I did some caving and exploring, but only enough to fill out my map. I started to see a jungle and panicked and ran away. I want jungle ruins in 1.3. Hopefully not enough chunks loaded and I still have a chance of getting ruins there. If not....oh well. I'm sure there are lots of jungles.

While exploring, I was thinking of where to put future villages. I think the nearby swamp will be fine for the swamp village, but I don't have a decent plains biome. I found a small one but I don't know. I might go farther out after 1.3 to find a bigger one. The nearby desert should be fine for the desert village, too, but I think I'm going to fill in all the little pockets of water.

Ummm, yeah. Oh, I don't remember if I asked before, but what are the rules regarding showing a screenshot of a map? Is it okay?

Most of the time, jungles are huge anyways, so I doubt you I don't know how to word it so I'm just going to transition thoughts midsentence and assume you understand. Haha.

All I've found regarding plains biomes have been absolutely huge. Shouldn't be too much longer before you find one, if you go looking again, that is.

And I hope showing a map is okay. Haha. Rei's has been in every one of my screenshots for a while and my video update!

I had to read that sentence, if you can even call it that, like five times. My eyes crossed. I think part of my brain imploded. Wat, lol. Jungles are huge, aren't they? So I guess I should be good.

Forgot about your minimap. I guess it's probably okay then!

So, a brief update. I went caving and gathered up more coal, iron, gold and a teeny amount of redstone and lapis. Didn't find any diamond, but I don't expect to in a cave.

I did some more drawing and have very rough sketchy concepts of Morris and Markus. Markus turned out to look older than I intended but I'm going to blame that on his stupid expression. I figure he's probably 19 to 21. Marilize is in her twenties and Morris I'm going to put at pushing 30. His parents are around 60 but I'd say they look pretty darned good for their age.

Morris:

Morris-concept.png?t=1341619127

He looks like a bum despite his wealthy upbringing, but he won't accept anything from his parents, preferring to eek out a living doing...something. Probably harvesting wild mushrooms for the mushroom hut owner. Not sure yet! But as I've mentioned before, he has a curious fascination with creepers. He likes to paint his face green and lurk in the bushes, staring at people and beasties alike. Sadly (in his eyes at least), he is unable to spontaneously combust, so he makes due with hissing and lighting fire crackers.

Markus:

Markus-concept.png?t=1341619088

He aspires to be the generic hero type. Athletic, handsome, brave, etc. Markus is always flirting with the ladies and nearly every eligible girl in town has the hots for him, yet he never dates anyone. Markus is very serious about his future career in protecting the town (as a guard or sheriff, not sure) and spends most of his time training and standing guard at one of the watch towers. He's loyal to his parents and tries to maintain a good relationship with his siblings, but they are hard to deal with.

Marilize can be very cold and Morris is just...odd.

---

I'm thinking that Hester, the milk maid (eldest daughter of Gunner and Agnes Hardy, the farming family), is a very shy, awkward girl who is considered rather plain and boring by her peers. She has feelings for Markus but is too scared to profess to him, Plus he's always surrounded by admirers, many of them other girls who Hester sees as much better matches for him than a simple milk maid.

I um, tend to have a lot of silly romance going on. I blame that on my best friend, she's rubbed off on me. D:

I like confusing people. Haha.

They do look really good for 60! Haha. Course, this is a different universe, so the laws of our nature don't apply.

I love how Morris is bald, showing no resemblance with blue hair to his family! You know, they had that spontaneous combustion thing happen in Spain a few years back. But again, different universe. Haha.

Markus looks like a dude I went to junior college with. Except for the blue hair, of course. Haha. I think he should be a guard/captain of the guard. Sheriff just doesn't fit with the blue hair, in my opinion. *Shrug.

Poor Hester. =/ Markus is gonna marry her one day, right?? I mean, she's going to need saving from something, he'll have to rescue her, and they'll fall madly in love, right??

Of course Morris is bald. Have YOU ever seen a Creeper with hair? Neither has Morris. He shaves, man. No unsightly blue curls for him.

Hm, yeah, Markus does look more like a guard. I haven't put much thought into the world building of my AMCWAS world, and so I'm not sure how Merris is protected. I guess just guards with a captain being in charge, rather than a sheriff and deputies and such.

I do want Hester and Markus to end up together. :3 Thought about Hester delivering anonymous glasses of milk to the guard house where he's usually at. She's a milk maid...thought it was fitting? Hester thinks she's being stupid stupid stupid, Markus can afford to drink much finer stuff like imported wine, he's not going to be impressed with the milk.

Markus realizes right away who's sending the milk and he keeps meaning to go pay the Hardy farm a visit, but he's quite busy and every time he tries to slink off, he's bombarded with a crowd and when Hester sees that coming she hides in the hay in the barn. :(

Perhaps one night Markus switches guard duty with someone else, and sneaks off to the farm at night. He's attacked by monsters and wounded and makes it to the barn and collapses there. Hester happens to be in there, I don't know. She's checking up on a young calf. And seeing Markus injured, Hester helps him out and since they're finally alone, they can express how they really feel. Yay! :D

Still working out Hester's design, and funny enough, a design I was going for at first for her, is now being turned over to Lucinda, the lady who runs the cafe.

My characters will have a bad case of anime hair so expect all colors of the rainbow. It's a different universe, like you said. :P I need to have a Groose clone, too (Best. Zelda. Character. Ever. Groose fangirl right here, not ashamed in the slightest)

True, true. Creepers do not have hair. Haha.

Guards with a captain sounds better than deputies and a sheriff. Good choice. *Nods.

I do like that story. When is it going to happen in Merris, or has it already happened? When it does happen, it's going to have to set-off a huge chain of reactions; at least, I hope. Haha.

You never did tell us about Lucinda's personality, other than her and Harold are in a pastry war, of sorts. Haha. Team Harold!

And I agree. Nothing wrong with anime hair! =D And oh, boy... Groose. Haha.

Hm, I think I'll pretend my AMCWAS world is a sort of adventure map, though sadly there won't really be any explosions or an actual plot. Just little snippets of dialogue and little mini stories in books everywhere. I probably shouldn't give away everything so you guys can experience it first hand in the next world download (maybe one day I'll offer my world up for download on the MC Forums, too. Might be fun.)

But for now, I guess I can keep brainstorming and giving you my ideas. Any of it could be changed at any time. Consider all this um, the alpha story.

As for Lucinda. Uh, I really don't know much about her yet, either. So I'm going to make this up as I go. It's kind of fun that way.

Her full name is Lucinda Uriel Lumiere, nicknamed "Lulu" by the community. Close friends may call her Lucy. She is not originally from Merris, but from a small village in the snowy forests not too far away. Her love for hot drinks may be because of her origins.

Lulu started out by first renting one of the little stalls on the townsquare main floor, selling coffee and donuts. When Lulu began experimenting with specialty brews and offering more pastry varieties, Merrisians started flocking to her stall. Eventually, Lulu saved up enough to rent an empty building next to the bakery. She's a very energetic person who loves experimenting with new ideas and likes input from her customers. Lulu is strong spirited and not afraid to speak her mind. She likes to be daring and keep things fresh and exciting, and enjoys a good challenge. Lulu also likes to push people's buttons, especially Harold's.

Harold Dinkle comes from a long line of bakers. He claims that the Dinkles have been baking bread in the mountain long before Merris was even thought of. Harold likes tradition and keeping things just as they are. He's afraid of change (though he'll tell you he's not scared of anything) and can be quite stubborn. If you don't like something he makes, it's because you're wrong. He's not changing NUTHIN'. Harold is an older man, probably very late thirties to 40 and is a widower. Already passionate about his family business, he became even more focused on the bakery after his wife died. Harold usually falls asleep in the back of his bakery and sometimes Lulu will pound on the wall to wake him up and tell him to go home and go to bed.

Since the cafe and the bakery are side by side, Lulu and Harold can often be heard yelling at each other through the walls. Despite their animosity, customers do notice a twinkle in Harold's eye when Lulu says something particularly insulting, as if he's enjoying the arguing. Many curious townspeople will visit the bakery just to watch the show (though an angry glare from Harold will scare them into buying a bun and quickly leaving).

I want them to get married and live happily ever after but, I think their own characters would never do that. They'll continue bickering until the end of time, and never confess how they feel. But I think deep down, they'll come to realize that they love each other, and that will be enough. ;_;

More characters I thought about are the fortune teller. Madame (something), she's a zombie pigwoman from the Nether. (that's why the fortune teller's little stall is made with nether brick). Naturally, she creeps people out. The fortune teller is always right, but her predictions are often very vague. Perhaps Hester went to see the fortune teller once and she told her about the encounter with Markus in the barn. But it was so vague that Hester doesn't realize it was a true prediction until the event is happening. :P

---

I've finally decided that instead of building a church or a temple, I'll do something else. There is a path that leads outside of town. You can get to the zombie xp grinder from it, but before that, there is a hole in the ground that's part of a cave system that I decorated with a circle of stone brick. Maybe you guys saw it in the first world download. I wasn't sure what to do with it at the time, it just looked cool. Now I think it will be a shrine or a special well that Merrisians go to and say a prayer and drop coins or flowers or other stuff into.

I also finished exploring the ravine and caves connected to that and blocked it up. Will have to build a little shack around the xp grinder entrance. Maybe a priest or monk type guy lives there and he maintains the shrine.

Ooh! The alpha story. Makes it all official and stuff! And ya know, I was looking for a nice little story map today, and this one would make a nice map! Once you complete everything, you should definitely put it up for download!

I really love how Lulu and Harold are completely different with one loving new, exciting stuff and experimenting and the other not liking change. Makes me sad they'll never get married. But at least they're happy arguing. Haha.

I was wondering why that place was Nether brick. Pretty cool! And I really like the idea of the special well!
